Q & A with the Artist
We are proud to showcase a variety of different kinds of performing arts at the fringe.
What is your show? What kind of performance is it? What is it about?
My Show is one man, one act play about a man by the name of David Martinez who is in a tv show where he is voluntarily spending two years alone with no other human contact, surviving off of contest winnings and a bowl of rice a day; In front of a camera, answering live questions and being subjected to all kinds of torture from the producers and the viewers just for the chance of fame and two million dollars.
Fringe festivals are a place for art at all levels of creation. Where are you at in your process?
Is this a first draft? A previously produced piece? An experimental show? Or something else?
Currently, it's second draft for the one act. I've only ever done this show once before, the show originally was concepted for Central Washington University. I was lucky to have the help of Jerry Dougherty; the head of tech at the theatre department, who help me bring the show on it's feet and pushed me to keep developing the story. Currently I am working on a full two act show which I hope to get version on the stage real soon, and down the road I'm hoping to collaborate to create a different vision of the show that would have a female/and or trans lead.
Why did you submit your show to Omaha Fringe?
I'm new to Omaha, so I'm looking to get in the theatre scene. Plus, I've heard nothing but good things about this festival from many colleagues, so I figured I'd shoot my shot and submit.
What are you hoping audiences will experience when they see your performance?
What can audiences expect to take away?
I'm hoping that the people who come to see my show experience a dark comedy that is new and exciting, and have a good laugh. But Really, I hope people who see my show think about isolation and what it does to us as human beings when one is deprived of physical interaction, visual and audio stimuli, and even such as taste in food and mental positivity; and the culture of live entertainment such as streaming. At the same time connect with David and his need to be recognized or even just be seen or heard; a feeling I'm sure a lot of us have felt.
